I've been studying Persian classical music with a teacher in the LA area via Zoom. We started with saz, and he encouraged me to learn the hand drumming that is part of that tradition too. His rationale was that music is 80% rhythm, and that I would never fully learn to play Persian stringed instruments like the Saz or the Tar if I didn't learn something about the kind of drumming that accompanies and pushes them forward. I was hesitant because I didn't want to buy one - the good ones are handmade. But I took the plunge because I used to say the same thing to people I was teaching to play guitar - that they should learn to play drums too, so they could think better about when to play the chords and riffs they learn, rather than just thinking about what to play. I have learned to read the musical notation that is used in this tradition of drumming, a first for me as I have never learned to read any other kind of musical notation before. I am still a novice but began recording things in search of ways of incorporating this instruments and texture into the Folk Implosion record I'm currently focused on. After I sign off here, I'm back at it with this trusty Sennheiserr 421. Hope you enjoy some of these fumbling and stumblings. More soon!
