Don’t Google Me Don’t google me Cuz what they say Just doesn’t match The me today A changed young man At least I hope A strange suntan You periscope I rolled off assembly lines Reduced replaced old power lines I can be modified By strange events and hazel eyes Don’t call my ex Or take a poll Of other flames And shoulders cold Or if you do Give me a change To share my side And change my stance I rattle off a thought or two But in my eyes you see its true I can be a nice surprise A present tense, a knot untied I google you I want to know The history Of what’s in tow But since I ask Don’t rush to judge I will do not bear Your past a grudge I ride off away with you As you become somewhat renewed As I in turn was modified By strange events and hazel eyes

Fantasies 05:29
Fantasies Fantasies are easy Almost like a womb When people make you queasy And storm out of the room On screens and off the pages Memories and smiles They come to tide you over And please you for awhile I dream of you After we’re through I think of her The way we were And what might be With those I see And want to know But don’t say so Fantasies are easy Even as I drive When I think about you I’m glad that I’m alive I think perhaps you often Dream all day of me But you keep me a secret As I act blind but see (casually?) Rpt ch, then 2nd ch: I dreamed of you You never knew I thought of her All wrapped in fur And what could be With those I see And look in the eye As I pass them by (Another passerby) Rpt first v, end

Here in a darkroom The shutter and the click Came on (really) quick (I loved you at first sight No one put up a fight) The negative exposed A wolf inside sheep’s clothes Developed over time Hung out to dry on the line Here in a darkroom Up the pulses go (Because) The lens went zoom So now the closeup shows It can be a real surprise As shapes emerge to eyes The smell gets on our hands We start to understand Who am I what do you Bring from all that you’ve been through (If the picture finds a frame Would the problems then be tamed?) Rpt 1st ch then Here in a darkroom Red the safelight glows As the lens goes zoom An emperor disrobes (up the pulses go) (two emperors disrobe) Don’t cry if the print takes a wrong turn It can be fixed if we dodge and burn / We can fix it, cuz we can dodge and burn (Here in a darkroom We are both exposed True love will not care who May blush at what it shows) (Here in a darkroom As every shutter knows The lens will not care whom May blush as our love grows)

Kick Drum 04:33
To be used as To be used for That's why I knock Upon your door For love or wealth Or martyrdom In your trap kit I'm the kick drum Your foot swings I make a sound I'm nice and big Empty and round Your foot swings In perfect time A backbeat rings Inside my mind Deep down where My true heart hid I bang on pots and pans But you keep on the lid It's always about me But not what I want A trap set by your snare A hi-hat you flaunt Your foot swings I make a sound I'm nice and big To have around Your foot swings In perfect time A backbeat rings Stuck in my mind Go get yourself An 808 Or sample an Old jazz drum break It's not that I Don't like to play But just not in A programmed way Like a picture in a locket A high chair for a kid A picture in a frame A pot beneath a lid You hold the drum key And tune me to a note I match up with a bass Just to float your boat I was used as And often for When once I knocked On the wrong door Do you want my love Or just my martyrdom? Go get your trap kit A brand new kick drum alternate lines: I don't know where my true heart hid I don't know what you think it did I don't know where My true heart hid When you are there You keep on the lid Leads me to knock On your front door That's why I knock Upon your door Here comes a knock Upon your door But just not in a metronomic way A 4/4 way

Let’s make a memory All the plants in your window The quilt across your bed All the rings on your fingers The thoughts inside your head All the shirts in your closet And glasses for your wine All your friends and your family Don’t tell me you’re mine I don’t own you I don’t want to But I know you And I want to Share some hours And waste your time Let’s make a memory That’s yours and mine I don’t bring flowers I don’t cast spells A balloon ride Would make me unwell Boxes of chocolates Are so passÈ I don’t need a nose ring To make you stay
6.
Mannequin 03:28
Mannequin You look like my ex Look out you could be next Cuz I want what’s in store To be like what came before Have you seen Vertigo? You know how that one goes I like your clothes and style of hair I’ve got a rear view mirror stare From my head and onto you A mannequin I try to use Some difference helps me move on But not too much, then I’d be gone So who do I seem like to you? Was there a guy back in high school Who did you wrong, you wanted right I can’t be me, try if I might From in your head out onto me A mannequin dressed up to be Somehow the same, and yet not quite So who am I to you tonight? A dress a shirt a yellow tie A bracelet that can make me cry We know the tools, we know the trade We know ourselves and why we stayed But we don’t really know each other At least not at this stage / We don’t want to turn the page (cuz_ From in our heads out to be seen Two mannequins two waking dreams Two parlor games at the same time You play your role and I’ll play mine
7.
Metro 04:53
Metro I seem to think that I recall From Reamur Sebastopol We sped away to Odeon Where it seems I led you on You buried me with sweet malaise Inside the gates of Pere Lachaise But as we came to Les Halles The sign foretold, we missed the call It said that (told us) we should stop That we should descend And change lines at this stop Or waste more time again Yes we missed our stop Forgot to descend The turnstiles that we hopped Shake their heads again (We said that we would stop That our love would end But the turnstile cops Missed us once again) Yes I detetcted you were bored One day outside the Gare du Nord But still we went down to the quay And then the train took us away We pop out right on at the Louvre The pyramid permits my move I hold you and say what I want A picnic up at Buttes Chamont Ch I pause to think as I recall REaumur Sebastopol We sped away to Odeon Our love became a cover song A shadow we caught like a thief As we passed Botazris (as we looked back at botzaris) But now I’ll step off at Les Halles With someone new and miss your call
8.
The Bottom Line Invest in me, I will return Don’t overdraft, you might get burned The more we save and squirrel away No bear can wreck what our bull made The market flows up and down But over time more smiles than frowns You love me so some hate is fine You know I really love you That’s the bottom line It’s not a shell game, the books aren’t fixed Numbers in columns I did not twist The income is real, the cash is on hand With gold to back it up, I supply your demands Ch Br.... Exercise stock options check out interest rates I know that you’ll come back to me like a rebate I am solid like a US government bond Maybe today you left but you’re not really gone
9.
You give me things You’re such a shady hedge fund Use any means beneath the sun You’re like a credit default swap That the feds refuse to stop You raise my GDP To what end I cannot see I’m richer now for sure But such wealth makes me feel poor You give me things But not much love No you were not What I dreamed of You give me things I don’t want to have I would not say You’re my better half Once a new law Led us to merge But then our stock Became a dirge An S&L bailout, a peso rescue Would not change my mind You know that we’re through You gave me things But not much love No you were not What I dreamed of You gave me things I did not want to have No I would not say You were my better half An abundance of waste Leaves a bitter aftertaste I’ll reach for the mouthwash And think of the time I lost I’ll be richer in the end To lose a costly kind of friend Now I am my own reward The chairman of my reserved board

about

Rough mixes of an album in progress, recorded at Unknown Studios in Anacortes WA by Nicholas Wilbur. These songs will be paired with the two songs I shared on the first Unknown playlist, (Change and Don't Be an Angel,) which I recorded at the same place with the same people 6 months earlier.

Please keep this close to your vest, it's a preview intended for subscribers only. This is the first time I have done a solo album by recording songs live with a band as a foundation, (there was plenty of overdubbing after that, but we arranged it all together as a group process.) We recorded the basic tracks of most of the songs live as a trio with me on electric guitar, Eli on bass and Andrew on drums, except for Fantasies, The Bottom Line, and You Give Me Things, which I laid down on vocals and nylon string solo before we added to those ones. Another first: all the electric guitars I played were Gibsons - mostly Eli's Les Paul, and a semi hollow body they have at the studio. Usually a Fender guy, so that was interesting.

released July 27, 2022

All songs by John Davis, Endless Soft Hits (BMI). Andrew Dorsett played the drums, Hammond B3, Acetone organ, Mellotron, Tamborine, acoustic bass on Mannequin, and added an electric guitar part to You Give Me Things as well. Eli Moore played bass, electric and acoustic guitar, hand bells, and some piano. I played electric and acoustic guitar, Crumar synth, and did all the vocals. Andrew is featured in the picture. Thanks to these amazing collaborators, who are all great people. We sat around talking about films and watching stuff on the Criterion Collection after Nicholas went home at the end of the day.
